The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested a man from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday for alleged involvement with the abduction and extortion of Bangladeshis living abroad and smuggling of local and foreign currencies.
The man’s name is Saifur Akon alias Nasir, 37, and he is the mastermind behind a kidnapping gang, according to a press release. CID has filed a charge sheet before the court against three persons including Saifur in this regard.
The victim Abu Yusuf, 26, while staying in Greece, was abducted by the gang which demanded Tk 5,00,000 from Yusuf’s family in Bangladesh, CID said. Yusuf’s elder brother Sajal Islam and mother Salma Begum paid a ransom of Tk 3,75,000 to the kidnappers' bank account on November 28, 2019.
After paying the ransom money, the victim's mother submitted a written complaint to the concerned bank manager and informed the Bangladesh Bank. Later, the central bank sent an intelligence report to the CID headquarters to investigate the matter and take legal action, said in a release.
CID investigated the matter and found that ransom money was received through the bank. They also found transactions of Tk 26,51,000 local and foreign currency. Eventually, CID unearthed a ring involved in the abduction and extortion of Bangladeshis living abroad and smuggling of local and foreign currencies.
