The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) and the preventive team of Dhaka Custom House seized 22,99,500 Saudi Riyal worth Tk 6 crore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday night.
They found the foreign currency inside a luggage while its owners Mamun Khan fled the airport to avoid being arrested.
CIID Deputy Director Ahmedur Reza Chowdhury said the passenger checked in to board a flight of Emirates (EK585) to go to Dubai, but did not complete the immigration process sensing danger.
The foreign currency was found while screening the luggage, he said.
As the owner of the luggage could not be traced at the moment, they opened it in presence of other agencies of the airport and found the currencies hidden inside 34 shirts.
Later on, they could manage the identity of the luggage owner named as Mamun Khan and the process was on to prosecute him, the CIID official added.
