Critically injured, ex-justice Manik now in ICU

Former Supreme Court Appellate Division Judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik's one of the testicles have ruptured due to the beatings he received in Sylhet court on Saturday.

He was admitted to the Osmani Medical College Hospital ICU in Sylhet in a critical condition around 11:30pm last night, and underwent surgery. Hospital sources say numerous injury marks have been found on various parts of the former judge's body.

In a letter - of which a copy was obtained by Amader Shomoy - signed by Sylhet Central Prison Prison Hospital Assistant Surgeon Dr Md Imdadul Haque Chowdhury mentions Manik’s condition as “patient unfit.”

The letter, which also bears the signature of senior jail superintendent, reads, “Name- Abul Hossain Mohammad Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Age- 74 years, Father- Haji Abdul Hakim Chowdhury, Disease Name- Lacerated Scrotal Injury (outside). 

“It has been recommended to the jail authorities to send him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital Emergency Department with caution subject to prior approval of appropriate authorities.”

Sylhet DIG (Prisons) Chagir Mia said in this regard, “Former Justice Manik's condition is critical. The beating caused internal bleeding in his body. A testicle ruptured. He is undergoing treatment at the hospital. He is undergoing treatment under strict security.

Assistant Director of Sylhet Osmani Medical Hospital. Jalil Kaiser Khokon said, "Due to the beating, former judge Manik's testicles have ruptured. He has undergone surgery. He also has many injuries and cuts on his body, and suffers from high blood pressure.

“The army and the police are now providing security to the former judge. Strict security measures have been implemented in the hospital area.”

On Saturday afternoon, ex-justice Manik was brought to the court under police guard. A mob started hurling insults, kicking, punching and beating Manik as police took him out of the prison van.

People threw shoes, eggs and water bottles at him, leaving him seriously injured.

After the hearing at 4:30pm, Judge Alamgir Hossain of Sylhet Judicial Magistrate-1 Court ordered Shamsuddin Manik to be sent to jail. He was later taken to Sylhet Central Jail under army and police guard. 

The police had brought him to the court showing him arrested under section 54. According to the police, there was no lawyer for Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik during the court hearing.
