The movement of the shuttle train between Chattogram port city and Chittagong University (CU) resumed on Sunday afternoon, hours after suspension due to a sudden strike called by the staff of Bangladesh Railway (BR), demanding security.
No shuttle trains left Bottali Station on Sunday morning due to the strike the railway staff enforced to press home their 6-point demand, causing suffering to the students.
The shuttle train movement resumed at 2:50pm following a fruitful meeting between the railway staff and the CU administration.
On Thursday night, some students of the university allegedly beat up two loco masters after some students travelling on the roof of a university-bound train sustained injuries.
Md Anisur Rahman, divisional transport officer of the BR (East Zone), said that train movement was halted due to security issues of the staff as two loco masters were assaulted by the students on Thursday night.
Shafiqul Alam, publicity secretary of Bangladesh Railway Running Staff and Workers Staff Association, said “We had a discussion with the university authorities about our 6-point demand and they assured us of meeting the demands.”
Joynal Abedin, Sholosohor Station Master, said a train left for the university around 3 pm.
Earlier on Thursday night, 20 students who were travelling on the roof of a shuttle train suffered injuries after being hit by a branch of a tree when they were returning to the campus.
Enraged by the incident, the CU students vandalised the campus police outpost, and shops, and set tyres on fire in front of the Zero Point at the university.
At one stage, they also moved to the bungalow of the university’s VC, went on a rampage there and torched buses, creating panic on the campus.
On Saturday night, two separate cases were filed accusing over 500 people in connection with the vandalism at the bungalow of CU VC and torching buses.
