Ratul Islam Fahim, a 14-year-old boy from Cumilla’s Monoharganj who went to Malaysia in a container from Chittagong port around three months ago, died after drowning in a pond near his house on Saturday.
Ratul’s father Faruq Miah, said his son was mentally disabled. “Around 2:30pm, Ratul drowned while taking a bath alone,” he said.
Ashikur Rahman Hiron, chairman of the local union parishad, said Ratul drowned while taking a bath alone in the pond as he did not know how to swim.
“I went to the spot after being informed and gave some money to complete his burial,” the chairman added.
Earlier, Ratul went missing on November 13, 2022.
On January 12 this year, a ship named “MV Integra” left for Malaysia from Chittagong port. On January 16, sailors heard voices coming from inside an empty container ship in Kelang Port of Malaysia and reported the matter to the Kelang Port Authority.
On January 17, the ship was brought to the jetty. The container was opened, and the teenager was rescued.
Later, Ratul was repatriated on February 21.
