Cyclone Amphan hits Khulna

Super cyclone Amphan has started crossing Khulna district with a wind speed of up to 71 kilometres per hour.

Aminul Islam, an official of Khulna met office, said it will take one hour for the cyclone to cross Khulna.

Besides, several embankments in Uttar Bedkashi, Dakhshin Bedkashi unions of Koyra upazila have collapsed.

The local administration has evacuated 400,000 people in Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts until Wednesday noon. The coronavirus outbreak and social distancing have made the situation more complex.

Amphan, the first super cyclone to form in the area since 1999, has been forecast to cause storm surges, severe flooding and mudslides.

Bangladesh Red Crescent said one of its volunteers helping villagers to evacuate became the first fatality after the boat he was in capsized in strong winds. Meanwhile, a child died in Patuakhal's Galachipa after a tree branch fell on him during the storm.
