Cyclonic storm Jawad over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining area has moved north-northwestwards further and now lies over the same area, the Met office says.

A special bulletin, issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Saturday, said the weather system was centred about 1,030km southwest of Chattogram port, 995km southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 885km south-southwest of Mongla port, and 895km south-southwest of Payra port at 6:00am.

It is likely to move further in a north-northwesterly direction, the bulletin said.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 54km of the cyclone centre is about 62kmph rising to 88kmph in gusts. Sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre, it said.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted distant warning signal two.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution. They have also been advised not to venture into the deep sea, the bulletin added.

Meanwhile, BMD also said rain or thundershowers was likely to occur in different parts of the country in the next 24 hours.

“Rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at many places over Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions,” said another bulletin.

The weather may remain mostly dry with partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country, the BMD bulletin said. Night and day temperatures may fall.

In India, Cyclone Jawad is likely to hit north Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, which prompted the state government to evacuate over 54,008 people from three districts, reports NDTV.

The rescue team has evacuated 15,755 people from Srikakulam, 1,700 from Vizianagaram, and 36,553 from Visakhapatnam.

The government has set up 197 relief camps in schools and community halls.

Eleven teams of the National Disaster Relief Force have been deployed whereas five teams of the State Disaster Relief Force and six teams of Coast Guard are in place.
