Cyclone Yaas: Over 500 relief camps opened in Chattogram

From readying more than 500 shelters to arranging food and keeping medical support teams on standby, authorities in Chattogram district are all geared up for Cyclone ‘Yaas’. The cyclone is likely to make landfall around noon on Wednesday.

Executive Magistrate of Chattogram district, Umar Farooq, said they have taken all pre-emptive measures to prevent the loss of lives and property in view of the Cyclone ‘Yaas’ nearing Bangladesh.

"We are making round-the-clock announcements on loud speakers, urging people to move to safer places ahead of the cyclone. As many as 511 shelters have been opened to house people," he said.

Meanwhile, a cyclone control room has been set up at the Dampara power station by Chattogram City Corporation (CCC). Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has requested the citizens to contact the control room in case of any emergency.

Chasik Disaster Management Standing Committee Chief Counsel Zahurul Alam Jasim said, "We have taken adequate preparations to minimise the loss of lives and property after Yaas' landfall in the coastal wards of the city, including Patenga, Halishahar and Kattli."

Some 60 shelters have been set up in the coastal wards. "One control room has been set up in each ward, which will be connected to the main control room in Dampara," he added.
