One person was killed and at least 50 others injured as a gas cylinder exploded in an ice factory in Pathorghata upazila of Barguna around 11:45pm Thursday.
Upazila health officer Abul Fatah confirmed the incident to The Business Post.
The deceased was identified as Shahjahan Hossain Samrat 55, hailed from Parerhat area of Pirojpur district.
Of the injured, 12 have been sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) while the rest have been admitted to various local hospitals.
They include women, children and two members of firefighting units.
Pathorghata Fire Service Station in-charge (acting) Khalilur Rahman said panic prevailed among the locals as ammonia gas spread around one-kilometre area of the factory following the explosion.
The death toll from the incident is feared to rise, according to the hospital authorities.
