The 37th death anniversary of AKM Samsuzzoha, a language movement veteran, founding member of Bangladesh Awami League, one of the key organisers of 1971 Liberation War, and posthumous Independence Day awardee, is being observed Tuesday.

Late Samsuzzoha was a Gana Parishad member and also a lawmaker of independent Bangladesh’s first parliament. His father late Khan Sahib Osman Ali was also a language movement veteran, founding member of Bangladesh Awami League, and former MNA.

The ancestral home of the traditional Osman family “Baitul Aman Bhaban” still stands as a testament of time in Narayanganj. The seed of Bangladesh Awami League was sown here.

Late Samsuzzoha’s name is ingrained in the proud history of Bangladesh’s struggle for freedom and the independence war charter “6-point demand.”

On May 8, 1966, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced the historic 6-point demand at a public rally in Balur Math of Narayanganj. AKM Samsuzzoha had presided over the rally.

That day, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman released six pigeons to symbolize the 6-point demand, while leaders and activists took the oath to struggle for freedom by lighting five torches.  Bangabandhu was arrested from his home the same day.

On December 16, 1971, Samsuzzoha became the first person to fly the flag of an independent Bangladesh in the High Court, and called for unity and calm from the countrymen in a victory announcement through the Bangladesh Betar.

Later the same day, Samsuzzoha was shot by the Pakistani military while attempting to rescue Bangamata Fazilatunnesa, and Bangabandhu’s daughter and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from internment.

Late AKM Samsuzzoha was posthumously received the Independence Day Award in 2012 for his tremendous contribution to the 1971 Liberation War. Samsuzzoha’s wife and ratnagarbha late Nagina Zoha was also a language movement veteran. She passed away on March 7, 2016.

Late AKM Samsuzzoha’s son, late Nasim Osman became a lawmaker from Jatiya Party for multiple tenures, middle child AKM Selim Osman is the BMEA president and lawmaker, and youngest child son AKM Shamim Osman has been elected lawmaker in multiple tenures as well.

To mark the death anniversary of AKM Samsuzzoha, special prayers and recitation of the Holy Quran have been organised at the family residence in Chashahara Heer Mahal. The family has urged everyone to attend this special prayer.

Besides, the district Awami League, its associate organisations and various social organisations will also hold different programmes.
