A death row convict of August 21 grenade attack case died at a hospital after he fell sick at Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased is Abdur Rouf alias Abdur Razzak, 60, a member of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI). He was a resident of Rajair upazila in Madaripur.

Confirming the matter, Md Abu Sayem, jailer of Kashimpur Central Jail-2, said the body will be handed over to the family of the deceased after completion of legal procedures.

Sources at the jail said Rouf fell ill in the afternoon and was taken to the prison hospital first.

Later, he was shifted to Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital in Gazipur where the on-duty physician declared him dead around 4:30pm.

Alongside the grenade attack case, Rouf was also a death row convict in another case lodged over an attempt to murder Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Kotalipara of Gopalganj in 2000.

He was also sentenced to life imprisonment in four other cases filed with different police stations in Dhaka and Faridpur.
