Deliveryman held for stealing photos, blackmailing women

The police have arrested AL-Amin, 22, on allegations of stealing photos, videos, and personal information of young women by tricking them into handing over their phones during e-commerce deliveries, and using the material to blackmail them for money.

Al-Amin was arrested from the Rathkhola area of Gazipur town at around 11pm on Friday, Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Deputy Commissioner Abu Torab Md Shamsur Rahman said at a press conference on Saturday.

GMP Officer-in-Charge Ziaul Islam said police received a complaint from a parent, who said his daughter was being harassed by Al-Amin. The parent said Al-Amin was threatening to distribute her photos on social media if he is not paid, which left her mentally devastated.

The OC also said that Al-Amin works as a deliveryman for the online shopping platform Daraz. During deliveries, he would ask for the customer's mobile handset under the guise of adding the customer's address on Google location.

However, Al-Amin would go to the customer's phone's google photos app and add his own Gmail account there, allowing him to access a customer’s photos without her consent. The process takes only a few minutes.

Later, he downloaded the photos, videos and information of the victim.

Al-Amin then extorted money by sending emails to victims, threatening to spread their photos and videos on social media if he is not paid. Eleven email IDs, photos and other information of many victims were found in the accused's mobile phone, OC Ziaul said.

Police sources say cases have been filed against Al-Amin under the Digital Security Act and Pornography Act, and he has been sent to jail on Saturday.
