Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq has said Sunday's vote was a vote to protect democracy.

“We will protect democracy by winning Insha Allah,” he said while talking to reporters after casting his vote at Paniyarup Government Primary School centre in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria at around noon on Sunday, reports UNB.

Anisul Huq is the Awami League nominated candidate from Brahmanbaria-4 (Kasba-Akhaura) constituency.

Asked about the hartal called by BNP and the party’s non-cooperation movement to resist the election, he said, “There is a rule of law in the country. If someone commits injustice or crime, law will run its own course.”

"I have come to know so far that people from all over the country are coming to the polling centres spontaneously, and are voting. This means that people are committed to establishing democracy. That proves to be the case,” he said.

"Hartals are called to urge people to stay home. Since people are coming to vote, this means people of Bangladesh have rejected this hartal,” he added.

Replying to a question, Anisul Huq said, “BNP knows whether they made a mistake or did the right thing by not coming to the polls. I would say those who are democracy-minded in the BNP must have made a mistake.”
