Uyghur Muslim Rights Council (Uyghur Musalmaner Odhikar Parishad) held a demonstration cum human chain programme on Thursday demanding protection of political and religious rights for the persecuted Uyghur minority Muslims in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.
Around 100 people, including Islamic scholars and madrasa students, took part in the programme held in front of National Press Club in Dhaka.
Speakers at the program criticized China for ill-treatment of Uyghur Muslims and their systematic persecution.
They also expressed solidarity with the Uyghurs in their fight against oppression by China.
Placards depicting atrocities perpetrated by the Chinese were displayed at the demonstration.
Demonstrators demanded religious freedom to Uyghur Muslims and called on the Muslim world to pay attention to the plight of the Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang.
They also demanded a UN fact-finding team be allowed to visit various detention camps, stop harassment of Uyghur Muslims, stop reeducation camps and allow traditional Islamic practices in Xinjiang.
The event was observed as a token of support to Uyghur Muslims to mark the occasion of Independence Day of “The Islamic Republic of East Turkistan” which is observed by Uyghur nationalist on November 12.
