A group of demonstrators, including students of Dhaka University, blockaded the Shahbagh intersection in the capital on Monday morning protesting the recent communal attacks across the country.

Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge Moudud Hawlader told The Business Post that the students of Jagannath Hall gathered in the TSC area around 10:30am.

Later, they marched with a procession towards the Shahbagh intersection, he said, adding that students of other residential halls also joined them.

Due to the blockade, huge traffic congestion occurred in the busy thoroughfare and also spread to adjacent areas, causing sufferings to the commuters.

Later at 2:15pm, the protesters called off the blockade issuing a 7-point demand with a 24-hour ultimatum to implement the demands.

As a result, traffic movement returned to normal after four and half hours of the blockade.

The country saw a number of communal attacks during and after the just concluded Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Hindu community, following an alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a puja mandap in Cumilla on October 13.
