Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq has urged the residents of Dhaka to secure their valuables, such as cash and jewellery, by depositing them with close relatives or friends before leaving the city for their village homes to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha.

While assuring measures to prevent theft and robbery in empty houses during the festive season, Khandker Golam Faruq emphasised the importance of taking precautions.

Speaking at a coordination meeting on overall security and traffic management during Eid at the DMP headquarters on Thursday, he stated, “We would like to request everyone to deposit their valuables, including cash and jewellery, with trusted relatives or friends before leaving their homes vacant for four to five days.”

Faruq said that no roadside cattle markets, whether in Dhaka or on highways, will be permitted. Those who attempt to establish illegal cattle markets will face strict consequences. Additionally, no one will be allowed to intercept cattle-carrying vehicles and force them to unload cattle against traders will. Traders must clearly indicate the destination cattle market on their vehicles.

Faruq also highlighted the DMP’s commitment to ensuring the safety of cattle traders’ money and combating the circulation of counterfeit currency in cattle markets. Fake money detection machines will be available at every market, he said.

In preparation for the festival, the commissioner requested covered van owners not to operate their vehicles three days prior to Eid, which will aid in highway management.

Regarding the management of rawhide during the festival, Faruq mentioned that regular and seasonal traders will collect rawhide and store them at designated points, from where tannery owners will retrieve them. The police will be vigilant to prevent smuggling of rawhides.

When asked about potential demonstrations by apparel workers demanding wages and allowances before Eid, the DMP commissioner stated that factory owners have already been instructed to ensure timely payment of wages and allowances to their workers before the commencement of the Eid holiday.
