The Directorate General of Health Services has asked the law enforcement agencies to be strict in enforcing the ongoing lockdown and restrictions aimed to curb the spread of Covid-19 across Bangladesh.
The directorate feared that the Covid situation would worsen further if people continue to ignore the health protocols.
“I am requesting all to comply with the ongoing lockdown and restrictions strictly in order to reduce Covid infections,” said DGHS spokesperson Robed Amin in a virtual health bulletin on Wednesday.
“If necessary, the law enforcement agencies are requested to be strict in this regard,” he said.
Bangladesh recorded over 5,000 cases again in 10 weeks with 5,727 people testing positive in the last 24 hours until Wednesday morning.
The country also witnessed 85 deaths over the same period, highest since April 30 this year.
The number of confirmed cases jumped to 8,66,877 and fatalities to 13,787.
The daily infection rate jumped to 20.27 per cent, highest since April 18.
The DGHS spokesperson said the coronavirus situation has worsened in the country.
“Covid-19 is spreading over parts of the country, particularly in the bordering areas. The number of infection and death is increasing at an alarming rate. Strict lockdown has been enforced around Dhaka to bring the existing situation under control,” Robed said.
In its fresh initiative, the government enforced a nine-day lockdown in seven districts since 6:00am Tuesday to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections.
Restrictions in Narayanganj, Gazipur, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Rajbari, Madaripur, and Gopalganj will continue until June 30.
Earlier, the government had imposed restrictions on people’s movement on April 5 which were extended until July 15 in phases.
