DGHS Director General Abul Kalam Azad resigns

Embattled Director General of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Abul Kalam Azad has resigned amid criticisms over irregularities and mismanagement in the health sector.

He submitted his resignation letter to the Secretary of the Public Administration Ministry, confirmed Abdul Manan, Secretary to the Health Service Division.

The mismanagement and irregularities in the health sector got exposed amid the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Earlier on July 15, Abul Kalam Azad had to produce a letter to health ministry explaining why Regent Hospital and JKG Health Care were allowed to conduct Covid-19 tests.

“Agreements with Regent Hospital and JKG Health Care were signed on the verbal instructions of former Health Secretary Asadul Islam who is currently serving as the senior secretary in the ministry of planning”, he explained in the letter.

After Professor Dr Din Mohammad went on retirement, the government appointed Dr Abul Kalam Azad as director general for health services. Later his tenure was extended twice on contractual basis.
