A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced Directorate General of Health Services driver Abdul Malek to 30-year imprisonment in an arm case.

Judge Md Robiul Alam of Dhaka Special Tribunal-4 delivered the judgement in presence of the lone convict in the afternoon.

The court handed down 15 years’ jail to Malek for possessing illegal arms and 15 years for possessing bullets. Both the punishment will run concurrently.

Earlier on September 13, the court set September 20 to deliver the judgement after concluding hearing of arguments from both sides - prosecution and defence.

As many as 13 prosecution witnesses were examined during the trial.

Malek was indicted in the case on March 11.

Earlier on January 11, Rapid Action Battalion submitted a charge sheet against him in the case.

A team of the battalion arrested Malek in the capital’s Turag area on September 20 last year for his involvement in businesses of illegal arms, fake notes and other illegal activities.

They also seized a foreign made pistol, one magazine, five bullets, fake currency worth around Tk 1.50 lakh, a laptop and a mobile phone from his possession.

Malek is reportedly the owner of two seven-story buildings, a 12 decimal plot.
Besides, the work on a 10-storey building in Hatirpool area, owned by Malek, was underway.

He was allegedly involved in many illegal activities and made huge wealth by transferring employees of different departments through lobbying.
