Dhaka seeks 'special facilities' at Colombo Port for boosting trade

Foreign Secretary Masud bin Momen on Monday proposed Sri Lanka to introduce “special facilities” for Bangladesh at the Colombo Port to expand bilateral trade and tourism using direct shipping lines.

Masud expressed this during a bilateral meeting with Sri Lankan foreign secretary Admiral (Prof) Jayanath Colombage Colombo, Sri Lanka, a foreign ministry press release said.

During the meeting, Bangladesh foreign secretary also urged his counterpart for reducing the air-fare for transit passengers of Bangladesh.

Foreign Secretary is now in Colombo to attend the 22nd Bay of Bengal Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Senior Official Meeting.

At the meeting, Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary termed the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between two friendly countries as a 'unique milestone'.

He also highly praised the policies and steps taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to combat terrorism.

During the meeting, both sides expressed satisfaction over the ongoing close ties and communication between the two countries despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
