Dhaka traffic clogs up as students block roads

Dhaka city dwellers on Tuesday suffered immensely in reaching their destinations as students blocked the Rampura and other major thoroughfares, to press home their several demands, including road safety.

Since morning, thousands of commuters were stuck on the road after demonstrators took position on Rampura bridge around 10:00am protesting the death of another student in a road accident on Monday night.

The demonstrations choked the busy thoroughfare causing bumper to bumper tailbacks. Huge traffic congestion also spread to adjacent roads.

The demonstrators chanted slogans demanding justice for the victim and road safety.

Mainuddin, a candidate in the ongoing SSC exams and student of Ekramunnesa School and College, was run over by a bus in the Rampura Bazar area and died on the spot.

Later, an angry mob vandalised a number of buses and set those on fire.

Meanwhile, law enforcers arrested the bus driver and his assistant.

Earlier on November 24, Notre Dame College student Naeem Hasan was killed when a garbage truck of Dhaka South City Corporation hit him in the Gulistan area.

Students of different educational institutions have been staging demonstrations to realise their demands, including half fare in riding public transports and safe roads.

The deaths of two students added fuel to their demonstrations.

In another development, bus owners have decided to allow half fare for the students in Dhaka city.

Khandaker Enayetullah, general secretary of Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association, made the disclosure at a press briefing on Tuesday.
