Dhaka University shut indefinitely

Due to the situation surrounding the quota reform movement, Dhaka University administration has announced the closure of this institution for an indefinite period considering the safety of students.

Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Sitesh Chandra Bachar confirmed the matter on Wednesday. 

The university has also issued a press release in this regard, after holding an emergency meeting of Dhaka University Syndicate, presided over by DU Vice-Chancellor ASM Maksud Kamal.

The meeting paid tributes to the victims of the nationwide clashes centered around the quota movement and deep condolences to their families. Deep condolences were conveyed to the injured students and teachers of DU and all over the country.

After detailed discussion in the meeting the following decisions were taken.

After reviewing the situation, the university has been closed for an indefinite period in order to maintain the safety and academic environment of the students under the authority of Article 24(l) of Dhaka University Order 1973.

On Wednesday [July 17, 2024], all students staying in halls/hostels have been instructed to vacate their dormitories by 6pm.  Later, after the halls are reopened again, seats will be allotted to DU students  based on merit, read the release.

Outsiders have been instructed not to enter and loiter inside the campus.

The university has made a decision to provide medical assistance to the injured teachers and students. The Dhaka University also urged the government to find a logical solution to the existing quota system.
