Dhaka WASA hiking water price by 10%

Dhaka WASA is planning to increase the price of water by 10 per cent from July 1 this year.

According to a public notice, issued by the organisation on Wednesday to notify consumers, read that according to Section 22 of the WASA Act 1996, the price of 1,000 litres of water for residential and commercial supplies will go up by 10% from July 1.

This is an increase from Tk 15.18 to Tk 16.70 per 1,000 litres of water.

In terms of commercial supplies, the price will go up from Tk 42 to Tk 46.20 per 1,000 litre.

This decision will also be effective in the cases of unmetered holdings, deep tube-wells, buildings under construction and all types of (water and sewage) charges, including minimum bills. This notification is published as per section 23 of WASA Act 1996.

Dhaka WASA had previously increased water prices in July 2021. It wanted to increase the price of water in 2022 as well, but did not do so after a writ was filed in the High Court challenging the validity of this move.

At that time, the High Court had issued a rule asking why increasing the prices of WASA water supply – without implementing rules – should not be declared illegal.
