Dhaka WASA has again decided to propose a rise in water prices for both household and commercial connections.

“The agency plans to propose the new price to the government,” Dhaka WASA Managing Director Taqsem A Khan told reporters at his office in the capital’s Karwan Bazar on Thursday.

WASA plans to charge for each unit (1,000 litres of water) at Tk 21 for residential use, up from Tk 15.18, and Tk 55 for commercial use, up from Tk 42.

Taqsem said the company increases water price by five per cent every year to adjust with inflation. However, it needs government approval for hiking price above that level.

"It is our proposal, government will take the final decision," he said.

Replying to a question, he said WASA wants to increase the prices to reduce government subsidies for water.
