Former director-general of the Directorate General of Health Services Dr Abul Kalam Azad has claimed that he was not involved with corruption and discharged his duty with due honesty during his tenure at the directorate.
Dr Azad made the remarks after the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) grilled him today.
A team of the anti-graft body led by its director Mir Joinul Abedin Shibly grilled him from 10am to 3pm at the ACC headquarter on allegations of purchasing substandard mask PPE and other healthcare gadgets.
He said, "I was not involved with any kind of irregularities and corruption in office. I risked my life during the pandemic while discharging my duty. I joined at the work despite being coronavirus positive for the sake of the people."
"I resigned from my post and set an example. ACC asked me to appear before it and I submitted my statement over their allegations," Azad added.
ACC earlier served a notice to Dr Azad and summoned him before it on August 6 over allegation of irregularities.
ACC also interrogated six officials of Central Medicine Stores Depot for corruption charges.
The ACC summoned chairman of Alan Corporation Aminul Islam Amin and Md. Motazzerul Islam over the scam but they did not appear before the ACC.
ACC kicked off investigations in the health sector after allegations surfaced of officials being involved corruption in procuring mask, PPE and other healthcare accessories.
