Leaders and members of the Defence Journalists Association of Bangladesh (DJAB) paid a courtesy call on Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton on Friday and exchanged views at the mayor's office in Nagar Bhaban, Rajshahi.

The senior journalists, currently working in Dhaka, praised the greenery, cleanliness, lighting and beauty of Rajshahi city.

DJAB President Alamgir Hossain said, “At present, Rajshahi is the best and cleanest city in the country, but it lags far behind in terms of employment.”

He called upon the city authorities and the government to pay special attention in generating employment opportunities while maintaining the beauty of this city.

Mayor Liton said, “The fame of Rajshahi has gone beyond the country’s borders because of its excellent planning. If someone loves their city and wants to work, we have proved that a city can be taken anywhere by working together.”

He pointed out, “We will continue to work on Rajshahi’s development. Currently, a RCC Skill Development Institute has been established to create a skilled workforce and job prospects. From the first batch, 90 people were hired by various organisations.

“We intend to expand the skill development institute to the grassroots level.”

Regarding the plan to create Bangabandhu River City near Padma, the mayor said, “I want to launch the project within this term. There will be a cutting-edge solar panel power generation centre, a resort, a swimming pool, and other tourism-related facilities.

“It will add new dimensions to Rajshahi. In addition, initial steps have been taken to establish a river port in Rajshahi in a bid to create a naval route to India. If it is built, this region and the entire country will benefit enormously.”
