Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman has warned against transferring sacrificial animals from one market to another in Dhaka city, and cited firm action against anyone engaging in such a malpractice.

He came up with the note of caution while speaking to cattle market lessees at the conference room of DMP headquarters on Tuesday.

The discussion was held as part of a coordination meeting on the overall security and traffic management of cattle markets in Dhaka metropolitan area, ahead of the upcoming Eid-Ul-Azha celebrations. Representatives from different stakeholder groups were present there.

Habibur said the traders will hang banners in front of the truck citing which market the animals will go. If necessary, the banners will feature mobile numbers of lessees of respective haats.

The highway police and DMP will take strict legal action if they find any violation of these rules.

Besides, no animals will be allowed outside of their respective cattle markets. The traders and police will see to it. If cows come in boats or trawlers on the river, they will be taken care of by the river police. In such cases, the DMP will work in coordination with the river police.

Habibur added, “The district magistrate, city corporation magistrate, local police and the cattle market lessees will work with coordination. The management committee of a market will display the number of a local police station in the market in their banner.

“If necessary, a WhatsApp group should be opened with all stakeholders, and include a Focal Point Officer there.”

The lessees will demarcate the boundaries of the market with barricades so that there is no difficulty in traffic on the road. Police will assist in identifying fake notes. Adequate police personnel will be deployed to prevent doping gangs and malam parties.

The people related to the cattle market will assist the police by providing information in this regard. The lessees will make everyone aware of the rules by loudspeakers, he said at the meeting.

In this meeting, on the occasion of the upcoming holy Eid-Ul-Azha, security of sacrificial animal haats, detection of fake notes, overall law and order and traffic management were discussed in detail.
