A sergeant will not stop a car or a bus without any valid reason, but vehicles causing accidents due to speeding will be stopped, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman.

He made this remark to the media after the inauguration ceremony of “Traffic Safety Awareness Program and Road Safety Slogan Competition 2024” at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) in the capital's Tejgaon area on Tuesday.

This event was a part of the "Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project," launched by the DMP with technical assistance from JICA.

Addressing the programme, Habibur stated, “The long-distance buses with the gate-lock system will start trips from the terminal, and are only allowed to stop at the specified destinations. There will be legal action against transportation making unnecessary stops for passengers.”

“For inside Dhaka city, the speed limit for motorcycles and other vehicles have been fixed. For big vehicles the limit is 40 km/h, and for motorcycles it is 30 km/h. Understanding road conditions is essential for driving.”

“In Dhaka city, overtaking is not illegal unless the drivers are speeding. If the drivers understand the scenario and use their intelligence, overtaking will not be an issue,” he added.

Regarding the Mohakhali bus stand, the head of DMP said, “Currently, the Mohakhali Bus Terminal has parking capacity for 400 vehicles. However, 1,800 cars pass by every day. For this reason, Vehicles are left parked on the road for a long time.

“We discussed these issues with the bus owners, workers, and other relevant parties that buses cannot pick up or drop off passengers at any location. We have already initiated traffic police operations accordingly.”

Meanwhile, after inaugurating the event, Habibur Rahman handed over the leaflets to the vice-chancellor of AUST. Over 800 students of AUST participated in the event.  Faculties, journalists, JICA representatives and a number of people were present there.

The event mainly focused on proactive traffic activities, pedestrian safety, traffic management, and the importance of digital signals.

DRSP Project Manager Md Jahangir Alam (DMP ADC – Traffic Admin and Research) along with DMP’s Traffic Division and Research team presented this project’s specific goals and actions.

The training was supervised by Md Munibur Rahman BPM, additional commissioner of Police (Traffic).

The DMP Commissioner emphasised on the necessity of police traffic law enforcement, especially for students and mentioned ongoing efforts to improve traffic management capacity through international collaboration.

He mentioned DMP’s continuous effort to raise public awareness and ensure safer roads for all.
