The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has started a drive to stop connection of sewage to surface drains, canals or lakes by sealing sewerage lines of houses with banana trees.
On the first day of the campaign on Wednesday, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam and his team sealed sewerage lines of several houses at Gulshan-2 in the capital.
Speaking to the reporters, “We have prepared a list of houses which have connected their sewerage line to the surface drains. We will not let that water flow through the drains and pollute canals, rivers, lakes.
“The DNCC has been warning them for a long time. We also issued public notices to stop this practice, but they did not listen. So we started this campaign from today [Wednesday] by closing the household sewerage connections to drains with banana trees.”
The mayor, referring to a recent survey conducted by the city corporation, also said that in affluent areas such as Gulshan, Baridhara, Niketan and Banani, sewerage lines of 2,265 out of 3,830 houses are connected to lakes and drains.
