Doctors, volunteers scramble to save Chattogram depot fire victims

The relatives of the injured people and volunteers of Red Crescent Society at Chittagong Medical College and Hospital have been desperately fighting to manage blood and other medical support for the victims of the BM Container Depot fire.

Till Sunday noon, a total of 450 injured people were admitted at the hospital, most of which were employees of the depot and transport workers.

Yasir Ashaduzjan Ripon, son of BM Depot DGM Nurul Akter currently undergoing treatment at Ward No 36 of the hospital, told The Business Post that his father lost one arm in the blast and needs better medical treatment to survive.

Meanwhile, Brig General Shamim Ahsan, director of Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said the physicians of the hospital are working relentlessly to provide medical services.

The Disaster Management and Relief Ministry announced to allocate Tk 1 crore for the victims.

Besides, the ministry also allocated 1,000 packets of dry foods for them.

State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian announced Tk 2 lakh each as compensation for the families of the deceased workers and Tk 50,000 for the injured victims.

At least 43 people including eight members of the fire service have been killed in a devastating explosion at BM container depot in Sitakunda area of Chattogram.

Chattogram Medical Collage Hospital officials confirmed the toll as of 3:00pm Sunday.

The blast struck BM Container Depot, a private key installation of export-import supply chain, shortly after 9:00pm on Saturday sending shockwaves across a four kilometers radius from the scene. The blast shattered the windows of nearby houses.

The fire has not been brought under control yet till Sunday afternoon 3:30PM.

A 250-member team of Bangladesh Army joined the rescue operation at the BM Container Depot on Sunday.

Fire services are working under control but they are facing a shortage of water sources in the depot.
