Domestic flights resume amid low passenger turnout

After more than two months of air travel suspension in the midst of coronavirus pandemic, domestic flight operation resumed on Monday (June 1) on a limited scale with tight rules of healthcare guidelines on three major domestic routes.

The three routes are Dhaka-Chattogram, Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Syedpur.

Some scheduled flights on different routes were forced to cancel as passenger turnout was low on Monday, said an official of Civil Aviation Authority Bangladesh (CAAB).

Mohibul Haque, senior secretary of Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry told The Business Post, “Flight operation in major domestic routes began after over two months of suspension because of coronavirus pandemic. We initially opened flight operations in three major routes and the rest of the routes will also be opened gradually."

He also said “Preparations were taken at airports to ensure health safety of passengers. Some flights were cancelled as number passenger was very low."

Mokabbir Hossain, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines said, the national flag carrier Biman will run two flights in the morning and two in the afternoon in these three routes from today Monday.

He said “We have taken every necessary preparation under the guideline of healthcare safety and social distancing rule to resume flights in domestic routes. One of the flights of Biman Bangladesh already lefty Dhaka for Syedpur today. We will operate 2 flights in the morning and 2 in the afternoon on three routes.”

AKM MahfuzulAlam, senior manager (marketing and sales) of Novoair said his company will operate 7 flights on these three routes.

The ongoing ban on flight operations on international routes will remain in place till June 15.
