The Development Organization of the Rural Poor (DORP) has marked the International Women's Day with a rally and discussion with the theme “Digital Technology and Innovation, Gender Discrimination.”

These events took place on Thursday, in front of the DORP central office in Dhaka. During the discussion, speakers emphasised the importance of achieving equality between men and women, starting at the family level.

They also stressed the need to utilise modern technology to prevent violence and harassment against women and to promote economic empowerment for women in the country.

DORP Director Mohammad Zubair Hassan commented on this year's Women's Day slogan, which aims to inspire women to create employment opportunities through the proper use of information technology.

He highlighted the fact that, although almost all daily tasks are done through digital processes, 37 per cent of women worldwide do not use the internet.

Hassan further explained that if women do not feel safe online or do not use the internet, they will not have the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics professions, which are predicted to make up 75 per cent of jobs within 2050.

He emphasised the importance of establishing development and gender equality by encouraging women to enter the field of technology.

The meeting also focused on the positive impact of female friendly projects such as maternity allowances and the dream package, which were initiated by DORP. Senior officials and scholars from DORP were present at the event.
