The family of Dr Md Moyeen Uddin, the first physician in the country who died from coronavirus in April this year, will receive Tk 50 lakh by Wednesday from the government-declared compensation package.

Finance Ministry issued a letter on Sunday signed by Joint Secretary Dr Mohammed Abu Yusuf to the chief account and the finance office of the Finance Division to take necessary measures regarding the payment of the compensation amount.

According to the letter, Dr Moyeen's wife Dr Chowdhury Rifat Jahan will receive the compensation package money in her bank account.

The letter mentioned the family of Dr Moyeen will receive the compensation package as per grade-five, equivalent to a deputy secretary.

Dr Choudhury Rifat Jahan filed the claim on April 27 with all the required documents and recommendations from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College (SOMC) Hospital authorities, where Dr Moyeen used to treat coronavirus infected patients.

The government made an allocation of Tk500 crore in the revised budget of the current fiscal year to pay compensation for doctors, healthcare workers, and other frontline government officers and employees infected with -- or killed by -- Covid-19. The compensation package for Dr Moyeen's family is to be the first disbursed from that budget allocation.

Dr Moyeen Uddin, an assistant professor at the medicine department of SOMC, died on April 15 this year of Covid-19 while undergoing treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka.

Doctors and other healthcare workers performing duties on the frontline of the coronavirus battle are falling victim to the virus across the world. According to the experts, the pandemic seems to turn deadlier for Bangladeshi doctors in terms of mortality rate.

Deaths of doctors from Covid-19 are being reported almost every day in the country, taking the toll over 1,200 as of July 26, according to the data of Bangladesh Doctor’s Foundation.
