Dr SM Mahfuzur Rahman made Janata Bank chairman

Dr SM Mahfuzur Rahman has replaced Jamaluddin Ahmed as the new chairman of state-owned Janata Bank.

A letter signed by Deputy Secretary of Banking Division Jihad Uddin has been sent to Bangladesh Bank and Janata Bank in this regard.

The Financial Institutions Division (Banking Division) under Finance Ministry removed Chartered accountant Jamaluddin Ahmed from the post on Tuesday (July 28), although being appointed for a term of three-year.

Jamaluddin was removed after allegations of irregularities, corruption and bribery from customers were found to be true, banking division sources said.

Dr SM Mahfuzur Rahman previously is a former professor of International Business at University of Dhaka. He also was the vice-chancellor of BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT).

Dr SM Mahfuzur Rahman said in an immediate response, "I have heard the Banking division of finance ministry has appointed me as the chairman of the state-owned Janata Bank. But I have not received the letter yet. Upon receiving the letter, I will join the post of chairman of the bank.”

Jamaluddin Ahmed, General Secretary of Bangladesh Economic Association, was appointed as the Chairman of Janata Bank on August 20, 2019. He was appointed for three years.
