An alleged drug peddler has been killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion in Dhaka's Agargaon area on Thursday morning.
The deceased, identified as Md Kabir Hossen, 45, hailed from Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.
Confirming the matter to The Business Post, Mohiuddin Faruqui, Superintendent of Police of RAB-2 said two people on a motorbike including Kabir was passing by a RAB check post in front of the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) under Sher-E-Bangla Nagar police station around 5:30 am.
Sensing RAB's presence, they suddenly opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting the RAB personnel to fire back that triggered the gunfight, said the SP.
Kabir was caught in the line of fire and sustained severe bullet injuries during the gunfight, while his accomplice managed to flee the scene, said the SP, adding that two RAB men also got injured.
Kabir was pronounced dead at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital. Later, the body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for autopsy, added Mohiuddin Faruqui.
RAB seized 30,000 pieces of yaba pills, bullets, foreign weapons and a motorbike from the spot.
Kabir Hossen was a drug and arms dealer, having 13 cases filed against him, claimed RAB.
