A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Irfan Selim, son of Dhaka-7 MP Haji Selim, and his bodyguard Zahid on 5-day remand each, in connection with two cases filed under the Arms Act and the Narcotics Control Act.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kaisarul Islam granted each of them 3-day remand in an arms case while Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder granted 2-day remand in a narcotics case.

Earlier in the day, Inspector Md Delwar Hossain of Chawkbazar police station, the investigation officer (IO) of the cases, prayed for 7 days’ remand for each of the duo in the cases.

On October 27, four separate cases were filed against Irfan Selim and Zahid under the Arms Act and Narcotics Control Act.

A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on October 26 sentenced Irfan and his bodyguard to one year in jail for possessing illegal walkie-talkies and drinking liquor.

RAB said Irfan and Zahid were given six-month jail each for drinking liquor and another six months for possessing walkie-talkies illegally.

Two firearms, 38 walkie-talkies and liquor were seized from Irfan’s house during a RAB drive.

Irfan Selim, the suspended Dhaka South City Corporation councillor, was arrested from his father’s residence on Devdas Lane in Old Dhaka on October 26 for assaulting Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy.

Wasif filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station naming four people and several unnamed accused over the incident. The three other accused are -- AB Siddique Dipu, 45, Md Zahid, 35, and Md Mizanur Rahman, 30. All four are now behind bars.

According to the case statement, a private car hit Wasif's motorcycle near Labaid Hospital in Dhanmondi around 7:45pm on the same day when he and his wife were returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet.

Later, some people came out of the car and physically assaulted Wasif and verbally abused his wife.

The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Co-operatives suspended Irfan Selim from the post of DSCC ward-30 councillor the next day.
