Some teachers of Dhaka University under the banner of “Anti-Repression Teachers” took position at the entrance of Shahbag police station on Wednesday morning protesting the attacks on the quota reform activists.

Initially, a group of teachers numbering around 50, including Prof Kamrul Hasan Mamun, Prof Samina Lutfa and Prof Tanjim Uddin Khan, gathered at the Operajeyo Bangla of the university and then moved with a banner towards Shahbagh police station.

At one stage of the sit-in, police allowed a five-member delegation of teachers to enter the police station, reports our DU correspondent.

Later, the teachers came out of the police station with two quota protesters who were handed over to the police by Chhatra League activists labelling them as  Shibir activists on Tuesday night.

As of filing this report around 1pm, the teachers are holding a protest programme at the foot of Aparajeyo  Bangla.

Prof Kamrul Hasan Mamun said, "The way students are being oppressed across the country, it is not possible to take it as a teacher, guardian and ordinary citizen of the country. It is not possible to remain silent after the tragic and unexpected death of a student in Rangpur yesterday. More people were killed across the country. They were planning to die.”

“The students are protesting, fighting for their rights. There are also unwritten quotas that are followed from the appointment of university teachers to their promotion.”
