The dead body of a Dhaka University student was recovered from Azimpur staff quarters in the capital on Sunday morning.

The deceased, identified as Israt Jahan Tushti, 21, hailed from Netrakona district and was an Honours second-year student at the English department of Dhaka University (DU).

Confirming the matter, Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost in charge Md Bacchu Mia said the incident had happened sometime early Sunday.

The body was sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy, he added.

On information, a team of firefighters rushed to unit-2 of Azimpur Govt Staff Quarters around 7.30am and recovered an unconscious Israt by breaking the door of a bathroom on the ground floor of building-18. She was then taken to DMCH, where the doctors declared her dead, Md Saiful Islam, station officer of Palashi Barack fire station, said.

"Israt lived on the ground floor of the building with a roommate, who called in the morning for help over 999 when she realised their bathroom door was locked from the inside for a long time. We immediately rushed to the spot after getting the call," Saiful Islam added.

"Our initial suspicion is that she collapsed on the bathroom floor and died of an unknown illness. The girl reportedly had cold-related problems," UNB cites him saying.

Shafayet Ahmed, a classmate of the deceased, said Israt was a residential student of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall of DU. As the hall was closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she was staying at the staff quarters as a sub-let tenant.
