A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced Md Majnu for the rape of a Dhaka University student to life in prison.
Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 Judge Begum Mosammat Kamrunnahar passed the verdict.
On completion of arguments from both the prosecution and the defence on November 12, Judge Begum Mosammat Quamrunnahar fixed November 19 for delivering judgement against Md Majnu in the rape case.
Earlier on November 5, a tribunal in Dhaka concluded recording statements of witnesses in the case.
Later, a Dhaka tribunal framed charges against Majnu on August 26.
During the hearing, Majnu was produced before the court through videoconferencing from Keraniganj Jail. Special Public Prosecutor Afroza Farhana Ahmed read out the charges against him.
The same tribunal on August 16 took cognisance of the charges against Majnu and fixed August 26 for the hearing of charge framing.
On March 16, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) submitted the charge-sheet against Majnu.
The DU student was raped on the evening of January 5 when she was walking from Kurmitola bus stop to Shewra Bazar Railgate in the capital. The victim's father filed a case with Cantonment Police Station the next day, accusing unnamed people.
Majnu gave a confessional statement to a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate on January 16 after being arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from Shewra Bazar area on January 8.
