Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof ASM Maksud Kamal has urged the government to reduce fare for the students on metro rail.

He placed the demand while speaking at a thanksgiving programme to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina organised by the university authorities at Uttara in the capital on Monday.

Over five hundred teachers and officers of the university took the taste of the metro adventure. They took the ride from DU station to Uttara North.

Prof Maksud Kamal said, “If our students can travel at a reduced fare on metro rail, they will get an idea about the benefits of using metro rail, the development of the government and the facilities of the developed world. As a result, their mentality will change and they will feel proud of the progress of the country.”

Thanking Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the VC further said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been taking up and implementing various groundbreaking initiatives to transform Digital Bangladesh into Smart Bangladesh. A number of mega projects including Padma Bridge, Metro Rail, Karnaphuli Tunnel and Elevated Expressway have already been implemented in the country.”

“To continue this progress, the ruling party should be voted to power again,” he added.

Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall Provost Prof Md Abdur Rahim who moderated the programme said, “It is a matter of pride that Bangladesh is moving ahead against all odds. The daughter of Father of the Nation is leading from the front in building a modern Bangladesh. Dhaka Metro is a symbol of the country’s capability and status.”

“Many countries in the world do not have metro rail, their own satellites, the ability to produce electricity using nuclear energy. But all these modern technology-based developments have happened and are happening in the country. That is no longer a dream but a reality,” he added.

Prof Rahim also demanded a concessional rate for students so that they can save their time and concentrate more on their studies.

DU Treasurer Prof Mamatz Uddin Ahmed and Pharmacy Faculty Dean Prof Sitesh Chandra Bachar spoke at the event, among others.
