DUJA condemns police attack on journalists at Supreme Court

Dhaka University Journalists Association (DUJA) on Thursday condemned police attack on the journalists at the Supreme Court of the country, which left at least 10 journalists injured a day ago.

Terming the attack as heinous, DUJA issued a statement signed by the president and general secretary.

“The way the police have attacked journalists on the premises of the highest court of the country is totally unexpected in a civilized society. Through this attack, the constitutionally recognised freedom for media has been trampled and created a brutal example of human rights violations. This despicable attack is totally against the law,” the statement reads.

“There have been more examples of attacking journalists. As administration didn’t take any steps against those attacks, the incidents of attacking and abusing journalists have increased in recent times,” the statement says.

In the statement, DUJA leaders demanded justice for the attack and asked the government to bear the medical costs of the injured journalists.

At least 10 of the journalists who were covering the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election at an auditorium of the Supreme Court, the highest court of the country, came under police attack while performing their duty on Wednesday.
