Education Minister Dipu Moni on Monday said that there is no risk of students missing admission to secondary schools in the 2023 academic year.

“Everyone will get a seat at a government or private school. However, not all of them may be able to get admitted to the school of their choice,” she said while inaugurating the digital lottery for admission at government secondary schools.

The central lottery for admission in 1,07,890 vacant seats at government-run secondary schools took place at the event held at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka.

“Children should be given equal opportunities, and digital lotteries are very important for the equality of the opportunity,” the minister said.

The digital lottery was introduced to remove the complexity of the admission process, she said, adding that while many people are happy with the lottery, some parents are unhappy due to not being able to enrol their children in schools as per their choice.

“School admission has been digitised, while lobbying, admission-coaching trade, and illegal admission have been stopped through the process,” Dipu Moni mentioned.

A total of 540 government schools under the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) participated in the digital lottery programme.

Against 1,07,890 vacant seats in government schools, 6,38,593 applications were submitted for admission in the next academic year.

The digital lottery for admission of students from classes I to IX in non-government secondary schools will be held Tuesday at the same venue.

Among others, Education Ministry’s secondary and higher education division secretary Abu Bakar Siddique and DSHE director general Prof Nehal Ahmed were present at Monday’s event.
