Newly-elected MPs take oath Wednesday

The newly elected members of the 12th Jatiya Sangsad will take the oath of office Wednesday.

The oath-taking ceremony will be held in parliament at 10am, Chief Whip Nur-e Aalm Chowdhury confirmed the media on Tuesday.

The speaker of the 11th parliament, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, will formally administer the oath, reports BSS.

The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday afternoon published a gazette notification on the results of the 12th national polls with details of 298 newly elected members of parliament (MPs).

As per the constitutional rules, there is an obligation to take oath within three days of the gazette notification.

In the parliamentary election held on January 7, the ruling Awami League won 222 seats, while independents won 62, Jatiya Party 11, and Bangladesh Workers Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Bangladesh Kalyan Party won one seat each.

Polls for one constituency, Naogaon-2, were postponed following the death of a candidate in December.

The EC will announce the result of another constituency, Mymensingh-3, later as polling of one of the centres was withheld.

According to the constitution, the speaker administers the oath to the newly elected MPs after publication of the official gazette of the election results.

If the speaker is unable or unwilling to administer the oath to the MPs within three days of publication of the gazette, the chief election commissioner shall administer the oath within the next three days.

And if an MP does not take oath within 90 days from the date of the first meeting of the parliament after being elected, their seat shall be vacant.

However, before the expiry of this 90-day period, the speaker can extend it for good cause. Usually, the MPs of the party with the majority of seats are sworn in first followed by others in succession.

HC bars publishing gazette on Dhaka-4 polls result

Meanwhile, the High Court on Tuesday asked EC not to publish a gazette notification on the result of the 12th national election in the Dhaka-4 constituency.

It also issued a rule, asking the EC to dispose of within 10 days a plea for re-election in 18 polling centres over allegations of serious irregularities.

Awami League-backed candidate and Supreme Court lawyer Sanjida Khanam, who came in second in the January 7 election bagging 22,577 votes from Dhaka-4, confirmed the matter to the media on Tuesday.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice Md Bashir Ullah passed the order after holding a hearing on a plea filed by Sanjida.

Independent candidate Awlad Hossain had won from this constituency, securing 24,775 votes, on Sunday.
