Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md Jahangir Alam on Thursday said a level playing field will be ensured for all the participating political parties in the upcoming 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections as the EC is determined to hold free, fair and peaceful polls.

He said this after a meeting between the Election Commission and Trinamool BNP at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the city's Agargaon area.

An 18-member delegation of Trinamool BNP was led by its Chairperson Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury. Trinamool BNP Secretary General Taimur Alam Khandaker and Executive Chairperson Antara Selim Huda, daughter of Trinamool BNP Founder Nazmul Huda, joined the meeting, among others.

Noting that Trinamool BNP is a registered political party in Bangladesh, the EC secretary said the party leaders gave a 12-point proposal to the EC and said they will submit the proposals in written format later.

Jahangir Alam said in their proposal, they requested the EC to take steps regarding legal procedures to hold free and fair elections, especially regarding the publishing of results at voting centres and handing over the election results to polling agents of candidates with signatures of returning officers at the voting centres.

They were assured that the powers vested upon EC as per the laws and the country's constitution will fully be exercised, he said, adding that the EC sought cooperation from all to hold free, fair and peaceful elections by exercising the power given to the commission by the constitution.
