Edible oil still being sold at previous price

Traders are continuing to sell edible oil at previous prices despite the government reduced the price of soybean oil by Tk 10 per litre and palm oil by Tk 2 per litre 10 days ago.

Retailer on Thursday said most of the wholesalers have stocks of previous high soybean and palm oil, so they do not sell the new oil until the stock runs out.

As per newly set prices, the bottled soybean oil has dropped by Tk 10 per litre to Tk 179 and loose soybean oil has dropped by Tk 8 to Tk 159 per litre. But the benefit of such measures was not evident at the capital’s many kitchen markets, including at Segunbagicha, Maniknagar on Thursday.

According to the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) daily kitchen market data, bottled soybean oil sold at Tk 180-190 per litre on Thursday, which was Tk 185-190 per litre in the previous week, while loss soybean oil sold at Tk 165-170 per litre, which was at Tk 170-175 per litre in the past week.

In many retail shops, a litre of bottled soybean oil was sold for the previous price of Tk 189 while a five-litre bottle was selling for Tk 900-Tk 910 varying on markets.

According to the reduced rates, a five-litre bottle of soybean oil will cost Tk 873, down by Tk 43 from the previous price which is expected to be in effect from the next day.

Loos palm oil is being sold at Tk 130-135 per litre as like previous week while bottled Palm oil was sold a Tk 150-160 per litre. Bottled palm oil was not available earlier.

Mostafizur Rahman, a retail seller at Segunbagicha market, said after Eid Ul Azha, the sale of products including edible oil decreased a lot. As a result, many stores have not exhausted the stock of edible oil supplied before Eid. So the new price of edible oil could not be picked up in the shops.

However, the oil supplied by the representatives of many brand companies to the retailers is packed a month earlier. As a result, many brands are unable to supply edible oil at new prices. “We will sell at a new price only when the companies release the oil in the market at the new price,” Mostafizur.

The markets of ginger, onion and green chillies got stabilised after around a month of selling at higher prices.

Ginger is being sold at Tk 200-220 per kg at retail markets, it was earlier at Tk 250-300 per kg, while onion is sold at Tk 45-60 per kg. Green chilli is being sold at Tk 250-280 per kg on Thursday, it was Tk 300-320 per kg a week ago.

Nur e Alam, a vegetable and spices retailer at Maniknagar kitchen market, said the price of many spices including ginger reduced as the supply of local varieties increased in the market. At the end of the rainy season, the price will reduce farther.

The price of other essentials, food grain and spices including rice, flour, lentil, sugar and egg static previous high.

Loos flour is sold at Tk 52-60 per kg, while packed flour is sold at Tk 60-75 per kg.

Sugar is sold at Tk 130-140 per kg, packet sugar sold at Tk 140-150 per kg while lentil sold at Tk 90-135 per kg according to quality.

Potato price remained unchanged at Tk 45-50 per kg but the price of bitter gourd has fallen by Tk 10 per kg, sold at Tk 90-100 per kg, while eggplant ‍sold at Tk 80-100 per kg as like previous week.

Farm chicken price decreased by Tk 10 per kg but prices of chicken egg remain stable, sold at Tk 160-170 per kg and at Tk 140 per dozen respectively.
