All educational institutions in Bangladesh will remain closed until May 30 in order to contain the transmission of novel coronavirus.

Md Mahbub Hossain, secretary at the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the education ministry confirmed the matter in an announcement today (May 5).

All educational institutions have been closed since March 17 to combat the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, at a video conference with the public representatives and officials of eight districts under Rajshahi division over Covid-19 from her official residence Ganabhaban on April 27, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said government was planning to keep all the educational institutions in the country closed till the month of September.

"We won’t reopen schools and other educational institutions now, at least till September. These schools, colleges and other educational institutions will remain closed as coronavirus prevalence continues…," she said.

If the coronavirus effect continues, she said, the educational institutions will remain closed. "We’ll reopen those when it (coronavirus) stops," she added.
