The government has decided to provide an additional 5 percent bonus to civil servants in the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha according to the new pay scale of 2020-21 FY. However, if Eid-ul-Azha falls on July 31, the additional 5 percent will be deducted from their next month’s salaries.
Finance division on Wednesday (July 8) issued a circular signed by its deputy secretary Nasima Aktar and sent it to the Director General of Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (OCGA) asking to prepare salaries and bonuses in line with the 5 percent increase in basic salary of the new pay scale.
The uncertainty over the actual date of Eid-ul–Azha has put OCGA in dilemma over the bonus issue. OCGA office, therefore, had asked finance ministry to take a final decision on the matter in a letter last week.
If Eid-ul–Azha falls on July 31, public servants will get bonus equal to the basic salary of June. But, if it falls on August 1, the bonus will be based on the basic salary of July. In that case, government employees will get more bonus.
According to the existing pay structure, 5 percent annual increment for government employees has been effective from July 1.
Mahammad Moniul Islam, President of Bangladesh secretariat officer’s association in a letter has demanded bonus according to new pay scale bonus regardless of the day Eid falls on.
The government has allocated Tk 68,000 crore for salaries and allowances for 24 lakh civil servants across the country. It will have to spend Tk 2,625 crore more if public servants are paid Eid bonuses according to new under new fiscal year pay scale.
