BNP leader Dr Shahadat Hossain has been elected as mayor of the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC).

A Chattogram court declared Shahadat, also former convener of city unit BNP, as the Mayor of CCC after hearing a case filed seeking cancellation of the election of CCC.

Chattogram Election Tribunal judge and 1st Joint Session Judge Mohammad Khairul Amin passed the order and asked the election commission to publish a gazette notification in this regard within ten days.

Advocate Arshad Hossain Asad said BNP leader Shahadat filed a case with the election tribunal alleging vote rigging in the CCC election on February 24. The election was held on January 27, 2021.

Awami League candidate M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury was elected mayor bagging 3,69,248 votes while his rival candidate Shahadat got 52,489 votes in the polls.

The case was filed against AL candidate Rezaul, the chief election commissioner, election commission secretary, Chattogram regional election officer, returning officer, mayor candidate Abul Mansur, Khokon Chowdhury, Wahid Murad and Jannatul Islam.

On August 19, the Local Government and Rural Development and Co-operatives Ministry CCC mayor Rezaul was removed from his post after the fall of the Awami League-led government on August 5.

Later, Divisional Commissioner Tofayel Islam was appointed as administrator.
