An elephant calf of around 10 months of age was found dead in a pit of mud in a tea garden in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram on Friday.

Mohammad Abdul Awal Sarker, conservator of forests of Chattogram Circle, confirmed the matter to The Business Post.

“The young male elephant seemed to have gotten bogged down in the mud after slipping down from a nearby steep hill on Wednesday (April 21) night,” he said.

“On information, a team of rescuers went to the area on Thursday morning but they failed to rescue the calf and it died eventually,” said Mohammad Abdul Awal Sarker, adding that they awaited the postmortem report of that elephant calf for more information.
