Ensuring safety of Rohingya women the main challenge: Brac

Around 52% of Rohingya refugees are women and girl and 55% of them are between 18-59 years. However, ensuring the safety of Rohingya women is the main challenge, according to Brac.

The development organization said this during a discussion on Monday on the occasion of International Women's Day, citing the 2017 statistics of the Inter-Sector Coordination Group, an umbrella group of NGOs and development organizations working with the Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar.

Hasina Akhter Huq, area director of Brac Humanitarian Crisis Management Programme, said, "The issue of safety of Rohingya women and child protection is being given top priority because the matter of security of Rohingya women has appeared as the main challenge to us."

Musfiqul Alam Halim, senior assistant secretary at Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and in-charge of Camp-5 called on all concerned to inform the camp office if any incident of violence against women takes place in the Rohingya camps.

Discrimination and repression of women and freedom of movement, a hindrance to women's participation in different development programmes and taking legal protection services are being considered as the challenges regarding their advancement, the speakers said at the event.

The event was organised at Women's Market of Camp-5 at Kutupalong in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar to mark International Women's Day.

The Office of Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), UN Women, World Food Programme (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Brac jointly organised the event.
